I am glad you like them. More to come this spring. It has been a really busy year this year in the Old Oil Patch. I am bit behind on both build and drawing projects, but the next set will be John's jumbo parlor. I will get started on it as soon as Johns' plans arrive. Wich sould be soon, now they have been found.
To answer Andy's question on strong points of the SJ; I find the SJ to be very much like a GC but with a more pleasing shape and a bit more punch. I have built a total of four SJ's by the plans. The first was a Quilted Maple bs/BC Sitka top for my grandaughter, very bright very load for a smaller body if you can call an SJ a small body. The second was an IRW bs/WRC top for a client. It was the first SJ with the X-braced back. For you old timers at the fourm, number three will be no suprise coming from me! It was my favorite finger style tonewood combo, IRW bs/curly Koa top. I love this combo both bright and warm, more mid tone dominate but still plenty of clear distint highs and a warm bass that that you feel in you chest like a good shot of wiskey. It was the first with my new star-back brace...Yes I have made a change on the my more resent SJ back x-braces. On sj's and Dread's they are now more of a star (six point). As most of you know, I brace fairly light on smaller body guitars. I like to make them really resonant, and believe by keeping the individual braceing light but by relocating for best structural support and moving the axis of the back braces I think I have a more active reflector with just a little rebound in it. I have not done any real testing to prove this. Just going by what is ear pleasing to me. Anyway on the SJ I would suggest that if you go with the x-Brace that you consider adding the extra strut to make the star. Just split the spread on the x with that addional strut. The SJ has such a near round bottom that a simple x was probably not the best plan. In fact, it was a direct adaptaion from my OM's x-brace and the angle of the x spread was probably a bit loose for the SJ. Structurally the X is ok by but I believe if you are going to folllow my light bracing the star is the best.
